During springtime-97, we (some music teachers) started an instrumental project playing the music of Frank Zappa, though we thought the younger music students ought to have their share in this musical gold mine. Under the title "Frankly Zappa", a number of school-concerts were performed. The response was overwhelmingly positive, and we knew this was just the beginning.... We realized the necessity of engaging a lead singer, and after having searched for a while, we found him. In April -98 Per Lundberg came along, and ZAPWAY was born. The band is since then; PATRIK DAHLBOM(Mallets, voc) PÄR LINDQWIST(Guitars, voc) ÖRJAN BERTILSSON(Keyboards, voc) MIKAEL MYHR(Bass) FREDRIK MYHR(Drums) PER LUNDBERG(Voc,guitars) Sometimes the band is extended with a wind-section. Our first performance at The International Jazzfestival in Kristianstad 9/7-98 became a huge success. ZAPWAY plays a varied Zappa-repertoire, in the spirit of Frank, but in our own way. Beside playing rock'n roll, some of the band members are a lot into classical music, while some have their roots in jazz. We find this being the perfect mixture for playing Zappa.
I happened to listen to my older brothers Zoot Allures as a 13 years old kid. The more serious it became when Sheik Yerbouti was released...... The instrumentation of Zappas music is unique, especially for me as a mallet-player. If you play the marimba, you start listening to Zappa, sooner or later. I'm the only one in the band that has seen Zappa live, in Lund-88. favourite-rec:Make a jazz noise here.
Former owner of a couple of vinyl-Zappa-Lp's. Heterosexual and not musicteacher. I agree with Zappa; music is nothing but entertainment! Just like the others in the band, I worry that my double-chins will be shown on photos. "Of all noises, I find music beeing the least unendurable". favourite-rec:Ruben & the Jets.
Drummer, Malmoe,Sweden. When I was thirteen, I borrowed the "The best band....." from the public library. This was my first "real" contact with Frank Zappas music. Before that, all I had heard was some short pieces from Joe's Garage leaking out from my brothers room. I've always listened to a lot of different sorts of music, but always returned to Zappa. Still today "The best band...." is one of my absolute favourite records, a lot because of Chad Wackerman and Scott Thunes. But the more you listen to Zappa, the harder it gets to pick out one favourite. favourite-rec:The best band you never heard in your life.
